Fractals New Movements was a commissioned live dance/music collaboration by City of Austin Cultural Contracts. The collaboration featured DD Dagger (live 9 piece band) and Dancers Rosalyn Nasky and Sharon Marroquin, with soundscapes by composer Mark Orton and liquid projections by Scott Conn.
Created in part with a generous grant from the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin, with Support From Big Medium Gallery.
Fractals, New Movements explores the intersection of Dance, Musical Composition, and Visual Communication Design. A live musical score was performed by a Nine Piece Band which included a 4 piece horn section; Choreography was concepted and performed by 2 amazing dancers, a live, liquid art projection was improvised (a technique from the 60's), a lighting designer was utilized, as well as a gifted photographer and videographer.
The live band, also known as DD Dagger, performed a short set of their original material from their newest record while the crowd got drinks and settled in. The event took place in the quaint venue Esquina Tango on The Eastside of Austin, TX. A famous film composer, Mark Orton, donated some of his musical soundscapes to enhance the experience. His work can be found on movies like Nebraska, Everything's Illuminated, and The Good Girl to name a few. The live band weaved their sounds throughout some of his soundscapes; creating little musical worlds like "the two note solo challenge" where the musicians, a Bb clarinet and a French horn had to solo with a two note constraint and a "low end choir" that consisted of a baritone sax, a bass clarinet, a french horn, and an electric bass.
